The term “proposal” is one which spans a number of genres and conventions. In this regard, the proposal is particularly suited for the task of teaching rhetorical concerns: while there are rhetorical considerations for the proposal that are consistent across contexts, it is still a highly mutable form that can be seen in research proposals, grant proposals, and community organization proposals. Moreover, the proposal can be used as an argumentative document in larger cultural discussions.

Because the proposal is one in which the writer asks something directly of an audience, style, form, and convention are all ubiquitous concerns; subsequently, the proposal is an excellent site for teaching these issues to students.
