The profile is a highly elastic genre that can serve almost any number of purposes, enact a variety of styles, appear in many different kinds of venues, and address all kinds of rhetorical situations. Whether it’s an autobiographical narrative, a researched piece that blends facts with narrative (ala John McPhee), or something perhaps a bit more practical (like a job profile), the profile can serve as a site to teach students a number of rhetorical concerns.
