The portfolio movement in composition studies has been gaining a lot of momentum over the last few decades and for good reason: they work. Portfolios enable students to engage in the sort of extended, recursive, and metacognitive approach to their writing that is often neglected in short-term assignments. Portfolios also provide instructors a way to assess student performance in a more global sense.

The assignments in this section emphasize not only the reflective work the portfolio can engender but also a sense of the rhetorical work of the portfolio as a persuasive document.
